LEED-AP, GREEN ASSOCIATED:

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED Certification is the recognition that a building has met certain standards and codes for sustainable design and energy efficiency. LEED was created by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), a green building industry coalition founded in 1993 amid an increased cultural focus on environmental concerns. The goal was to create better buildings optimized with people and nature in mind.

A LEED AP credential distinguishes those with advanced knowledge in green building, plus expertise in a particular LEED rating system. The LEED AP exams measure knowledge about green building, a specific LEED rating system, and the certification process. Individuals sitting for the exam must do proper prep, pass the exam, and then earn 30 continuing education hours within two years of passing their exam. There are multiple LEED AP specialties geared towards different fields. These specialties include building design and construction, operations and maintenance, interior design and construction, neighborhood development, and homes.

LEED Green Associates are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and implement green building practices in your workplace and community. The LEED Green Associate will enhance your professional credentials, open doors to new job opportunities, and help advance your career in the green building industry.  The LEED Green Associate exam measures general knowledge of green building practices and how to support others working on LEED projects. Individuals sitting for the exam must do proper prep, pass the exam, and then earn 15 continuing education hours within two years of passing their exam. The exam is two hours long and has 100 multiple-choice questions.      

Both credentials above would be a great option for interior designers to pursue. LEED and Green credentials are highly important and basically required when practicing interior design today.

The Cost: 

• LEED Green Associate exam: $250 ($200 for USGBC members, $100 for students)
• LEED AP specialty exam: $350 ($250 for USGBC members)
• Combined exam (LEED Green Associate and LEED AP with specialty): $550 ($400 for USGBC members)
